2026 Road Maintenance Report
2025-26 road maintenance was significantly more costly than the prior year due to an unusual number of snow storms and several occurrences of icing along much of the road. Spring brought quite a bit of heavy rain which further impacted the road surface. As we’ve learned from the past several years, proper road maintenance requires repairs to potholes and the roadbed in general in both spring and fall. In view of that, our proposed 2026 budget increases the estimate for road maintenance in general while assuming similar snowfall to last year in the coming year.
Finished Causeway Culvert Report
The Board is pleased to report that the repair of the culverts was accomplished in February 2024 on time and under budget. It was done by a process called “slip-lining”. This involved sliding new culverts through the old deteriorating culverts, opening the causeway road surface to expose the tops of the old culverts, cutting/ removing the tops of the old culverts to expose the new culverts inside and securing the new culverts with fill material. The road surface was then rebuilt and widened over the new culverts. The rusted out ends of the old culverts were removed and new retaining boulders were set for the ends of the new culverts.
The results speak for themselves: the new culverts are nearly invisible, the unsightly, dangerous metal of the old culverts is gone and the roadway now provides slightly easier passage for two cars or larger vehicles like firetrucks or ambulances. After an unusually tough winter in 2025-26, the causeway remains in good repair.
